The Making of Yan George |
![]() |
Ever since he was young enough to hold a paintbrush, George has devoted himself to art. Throughout the years he has created a number of compositions consisting of mixed media. His style of sculpture is unique and his artwork momentous. The exhibitions of his talents led to his membership in the Union of Artists of USSR in 1986. Life, however, was about to change significantly in 1986, when tragedy introduced itself to George's life. Cancer hospitalized him for a year and offered a small chance for survival. Yet, as the soul of a true artist never loses hope, George left behind his homeland and immigrated to Los Angeles , California in 1987 with his wife and daughter for the opportunity to find a cure. Miraculously, after two more years of hospitalization and treatment at the City of Hope Hospital, George overcame the disease. The price to pay was a torturous recovery, both physically and mentally. Eleven courses of high-risk dosage chemotherapy, two courses of 50 G radiation, and three 2 to 12 hour long surgeries completely damaged George's body. A man who once stood 5'9 and 200 pounds now weighed 86 pounds. A man who once bent iron rods to form the skeleton of his sculptures had no feeling left in his hands. The mechanisms of a once strong and proud artist were benumbed. As life is barren for an artist unable to create, George suffered psychologically due to his physical impairment. An extraordinary sense of will power, optimism, and years of exercise helped bring enough feeling back into his hands to begin crafting again. Having left behind all his prior artwork in Armenia , he was ready to start afresh in 1990. As someone with so much to express, George devotes every possible moment to creating his next masterpiece. |
